Start Assessment

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) Injectable Pen

Mounjaro is an injectable medication containing tirzepatide, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist used in the clinical management of weight. A clinician administers this as part of a monitored programme, and patients self-inject once weekly using a pre-filled pen device. This page provides factual product information only and does not constitute medical advice.

How Tirzepatide Works

Tirzepatide works by activating two hormone receptors simultaneously: GIP and GLP-1. Both receptors play a role in regulating appetite, blood sugar, and feelings of fullness. As a result, this dual mechanism distinguishes Mounjaro from single receptor agonists. Furthermore, it may be a suitable option for patients with additional metabolic considerations such as insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes. Ultimately, your clinician will determine whether Mounjaro is appropriate for your individual health profile.

Prescription and Dosing

Mounjaro is only available on prescription. Your clinician determines your dose based on your individual health profile and clinical assessment. Typically, doses start low and increase gradually over a number of weeks. Therefore, do not adjust your dose without first consulting your clinician.

How to Administer

Mounjaro is injected once weekly under the skin, typically into the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Your clinical team provides full administration instructions at the point of prescribing. If you have any concerns about self-administration, contact your clinical team before proceeding.

Storage and Handling

  • Inject once weekly on the same day each week
  • Rotate injection sites to avoid skin irritation
  • Store in a refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius
  • Do not freeze
  • Dispose of used pens and needles in an approved sharps bin

Important Safety Information

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine. Therefore, only use it as directed by your prescribing clinician and never share your medication with any other person. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation, particularly during dose escalation. However, these typically reduce as your body adjusts to the medication. In addition, a full list of side effects and contraindications is provided in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication.

When to Contact Your Clinical Team

If you experience any unexpected or concerning side effects, contact your clinical team before your next scheduled review. Additionally, if you miss a dose, follow the guidance provided in your patient information leaflet and speak to your clinician if you are unsure.

Sharps Disposal

Used Mounjaro pens and needles must go into an approved sharps bin. Never place used sharps in household waste or recycling. A yellow sharps bin is available to order alongside your medication.

Your Ongoing Care
